Denoon Sieg
FMR jazz presenter Denoon Sieg was born in Cape Town (in 1933) and has lived here all his life – except for two years in Johannesburg. Now retired, he and his wife Norma, live at Noordhoek Manor Retirement Village, in the mountains above Fish Hoek. Their two sons live overseas, one in the UK, one in Sydney.
After three years at UCT (engineering and architecture), Denoon opted for a job in publishing, and spent virtually all his working life in publishing and advertising.
He retired in 1993 after 23 years at Reader’s Digest where he was Creative Director, directing the creation of the Digest’s promotional material. He also introduced and installed desktop publishing in the company’s editorial and promotion departments.
His interest in music goes back to his childhood, when, about the age of twelve, he ‘discovered’ jazz, and started collecting records. In his teens he added tape recording to his other hobbies, which complemented his interest in music. For some years he wrote jazz concert reviews for the Cape Times.
Denoon’s other interests include photography (still and video), and mountain rambling.
Denoon came to broadcasting by accident when his friend Henry Holloway invited him to stand in for him, and present Swing, Sing, & All That Jazz (for a week, in September 1995). He subsequently presented it regularly, on Tuesdays, and later What’s New (1999). Now he presents Just Jazz (alternate Saturdays, 17:00-18:00), which was first broadcast in May 1999.
