Diederick Basson
I grew up in Bellville and matriculated at DF Malan High School, where I had the privilege of being taught both piano and organ by the well-known Danie Smit. I then went to the universities of Pretoria and Stellenbosch to study music. At Pretoria University I studied with Wim Viljoen (organ) and Joseph Stanford (piano), and at Stellenbosch with Boudewijn Scholten and Pieter de Lange (organ), and Benjamin van Eeden (piano). In 1997 I went to Amsterdam to do research for my MMus, and to study with the late Prof. Ewald Kooiman at the Vrije Universiteit, specialising in the performance practice of German and French Baroque organ music.
Upon my return, I started teaching music at Stellenberg High School in Durbanville, where I am currently Head of Music. In addition, I teach organ part-time at the Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of the Western Cape, I am the editor of Vir die Musiekleier, a journal published annually by the Southern African Church Organists’ Society, and serve as organist at the Tafelberg Dutch Reformed Church in Cape Town. Apart from performing regularly as soloist and accompanist – as well as an organ-and-piano duo with my wife, Hanneke – I recently joined a jazz trio as double bass player.
Diederick presents Sunday Concert on Sunday afternoons (except the first Sunday of the month) at 15:00.
