Emerina Bakkes

I am 28 years old and live in Durbanville. My husband and I have our own business – a Spar in Bellville South - with his family.  The Spar has been built from scratch and was opened on the 21st of April 2010.

On Wednesday afternoons I usually go to Wallacedene township to give beading classes to less fortunate children.  There are approximately 30 children in the class, mostly ranging from 10 to 20 years of age.

I love traveling, experiencing different cultures, hiking, and anything adventurous.  I also like writing and I’ve written an article for “Die Weg” magazine which was published in May 2010.

Naturally, I love music … I’ve played the piano since age 5 (mostly by ear!) and I also play the organ (mostly at my friends’ weddings or churches) and the guitar (self-taught).  I like writing songs, but only when I’m inspired and I also get very little time to do so … the last song that I wrote was almost 4 years back which I sang for my husband on our wedding day.

I love cats … I’ve got two (very spoiled) cats of my own and I go to the Grassy Park SPCA’s cattery as often as I can to play with the cats there.  If I get my way, I would like to adopt a baby tiger, which, in my opinion, is the most beautiful animal ever created.

And last, but not least, I’m not a morning person and generally don’t speak to anybody before 10 in the morning.  That automatically makes me a full blown ‘night person’ and any song that I’ve ever written, has been composed at 3am sharp.”
