Greg Davids

I am a writer, director and producer of jazz productions and albums as well as human interest documentaries and current affairs stories. Being the son of a jazz musician, I have grown up around and have personally worked with the majority of great jazz musicians in this country and many from abroad, including the USA, France, Netherlands, Cuba, Surinam, Venezuela and Curacao.

I have presented my weekly programme, Continuum, on Fine Music Radio each Sunday between 20:00 and 22:00 for the last 14 years, since the station’s inception. Continuum is a programme of improvised music presented in an infotainment style with music and info sourced from my extensive CD collection. The show features influences from modern big band, bebop, hard bop, post bop and beyond, with detailed analysis of artist and music. As I believe the term jazz is a hopelessly inadequate title for such a varied and evolving music, I seldom refer to the music I play as such. The pieces may be influenced and derivative of all kinds of genres – from Indian, Classical, Arabic, blues, Latin, blue grass to rock and any exotic ethnic influences between – but always remains true to the concepts of improvisation and jazz harmony.

I have made it my mission to educate audiences on the history and direction of improvised music. Because improvised music is predominantly spontaneous composition, it qualifies as one of the highest forms of musical expression and a true example of freedom of expression.

I play and collect vintage jazz guitars and am the owner of Urban Soul Communications, which specialises in PR, marketing, film and radio production. We have our own state-of-the-art film and radio production suites and are based in Observatory. I am married to Fiona and have two children: Keri, 24, and Miles, 10.
