Sylvia Bruinders

As a lecturer in African Music, Worlds of Music and Ethnomusicology at the South African College of Music, UCT, I was asked to head up a programme of World Music on FMR in 2004. I resisted for a while as I had recently returned to South Africa after having studied Ethnomusicology in the US and had just started teaching. After many hours of enthusiastic chatting about it with Kechil Kirkham over a few months, and after scouring the South African airwaves and not finding any suitable “world music” I became convinced that this programme was needed in Cape Town, at least. I started the programme with a few enthusiastic students in June 2006. After a few months I was able to recruit more regular hosts.
