Description

Nicolas-Louis de la Caille was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris, a professor at the Mazarin College, an apostle of Isaac Newton & one of the leading astronomers of his time.In 1750 he commenced an arduous journey to the Cape to map the Southern skies & measure the shape of the earth. He built an observatory on the shore of Rogge Bay. Over two years he outlined and named many Southern constellations including Mons Mensa, called after Table Mountain. While here, he kept a diary of his impressions of local people & custom both at the town itself & on expeditions to the Swartland
