Description

Wrecking of the São Josè Paquete d’Afrique. This relatively unknown shipwreck was found in the early 1980’s in Clifton and misidentified. Later the wreck became a target for the international Slave Wrecks Project. Rigorous examination of the artefacts found on the site as well as archival documentation clearly identified the wreck in Clifton as the São Josè Paquete d’Afrique.
The presentation will discuss these finds as well as the state of the project. This includes the new directions the research into the wreck site is taking as well as contextualizing the wreck in modern South Africa
