This is an opportunity for fans of the 31-year-old German-born violinist, familiar with his rock-inspired concerts and CDs to discover his first love – classical music.

The DVD part is divided into two sections; first: Live In Baden-Baden, Filmed At Festspielhaus. Live in Baden-Baden shows Garrett performing with The National Philharmonic Of Russia, and being led at the baton by Vladimir Spivakov and Lorenzo Coladonato; a phenomenal performance. Second comes, Playing For My Life – a career defining documentary on the life and work of David Garrett following his meteoric rise to fame and the new recording of his Legacy album.

Legacy is a message from the man himself that he has never really been away. Throughout his rock-violin crossover years, playing pure classical violin has remained central to David Garrett’s life and work.

BONUS DVD – Playing For My Life

They may not have particularly robust or characterful voices, but the public’s appetite for all things retro has got them to this, their fourth album. Stylish, rather than substantial, it’s filled with busy arrangements of standards such as “I Got Rhythm” and “Moon River”, which, for the most part, are irritatingly light. Mannered perkiness reaches its nadir on “Good Morning” – its fussy tempo changes, cuckoo clocks and spoken “good morning”s will have you wrenching the duvet over your head and groaning.

The great Italian violinist Nicolo Paganini’s technique was so superb superstitious concert goers considered he must be in “league with the devil.” Sometimes I think the Bolshoi dancers are in “cahoots with him” too as their technique is so near perfect its hard to believe they are human beings like the rest of us. Nothing choreographer Alexei Fadeyechev threw at them – in his version of Don Quixote – seemed to phase them in any way.

Natalia Osipova as Kitri and Ivan Vasiliev as Basilio both young and handsome not only looked the part of the young lovers they could pirouette, fouette, jete, and produce batterie with such amazing grace, ease and speed they were breathtaking to watch.

Denis Savin as Gamache, the “twee” wealthy nobleman Kitri’s father wanted her to marry was every wholesome girl’s nightmare of a suitor.

Choreographically I thought Alexei Loparevich’s Don Quixote lacked the necessary crafting to make his part really count. However Alexander Petukhov as his Squire Sancho Panza with his round belly and gauche ways made one smile.

The immaculately groomed and rehearsed corps de ballet went through their paces with assurance. And Pavel Klinichev conducting Minkus’s melodic music at a pretty good pace, brought the best out of the orchestra, so dancers and music blended as they should.

What disappointed in this film was the camera work in the first act. True the speed of movement of the dancers precludes cameras being held in one position. But too often the movements were blurred causing a “sea sick feeling”

Nonetheless The Bolshoi film of Don Quixote is memorable.

“You ask for my heart in vain; I no longer own it”

Mozart’s most sophisticated Italian comedy returns in a thought-provoking new staging.

Beethoven complained that the libretto was immoral. Wagner disliked the music. Widely misunderstood for generations after Mozart’s death, Così fan tutte is increasingly admired as one of his most unsettling and sophisticated masterpieces. Profound pain, betrayal and sadness show through the cracks in the surface of this brittle comedy, set to some of Mozart’s most sublime music, as two lovers assume disguises to test the constancy of their fiancées.

“Beautiful night, night of love, smile upon our revels”

The German Romantic writer ETA Hoffmann’s fantastical stories have inspired a number of stage works, including the beloved ballets The Nutcracker and Coppélia, but none as extravagant as Offenbach’s operatic account of his life. Newly besotted with the actress Stella, Hoffmann entertains his friends with tales of his failed love affairs with three women: a winsome clockwork doll, a frail musician determined to sing herself to death, and a Venetian courtesan to whom he gives his shadow. With spectacular roles for a succession of leading ladies, meltingly lovely numbers including the evergreen ‘Barcarolle’ and sparkling ‘Doll Song’ and plenty of opportunities for spectacular staging, Hoffmann has proved to be Offenbach’s most popular stage work – an eccentric gem which charms the ear and tickles the imagination.

Left incomplete at the time of Offenbach’s death, Hoffmann presents unique challenges to scholars, directors and conductors – with no authentic text, interpreters have been free to try out numerous creative ways to make the piece succeed on stage. As a result, listeners and viewers are likely to hear different music in different running orders each time they encounter Hoffmann in the opera house or on a recording!
