Len van Zyl:
Len van Zyl croppedLen van Zyl had a successful career in advertising (his other passion) over 30 years, serving as Chairman, President, CEO or Director in major advertising agencies in South Africa, Britain, USA and Zimbabwe. His true passion however is music in general and classical music in particular. In 1995 when the erstwhile SABC National symphony orchestra was disbanded Len was part of a small team of music lovers who launched an effort to keep the orchestra going. While living in America he served on the development committee of the famous Philadelphia Orchestra and since returning to South Africa he initiated and finances the Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition which gives young South Africans the opportunity to study conducting under the tutelage of Maestro Professor Victor Yampolsky at Northwestern University, Chicago.

Martin Hesse:
Martin Hesse croppedAfter completing a BMus (Hons) majoring in composition at UCT, in 1985 I began my career as a sound engineer at the SABC, Auckland Park. A year later I moved to the SABC’s Music Department, where I was music compiler for classical music programmes. In 1989, I moved to Cape Town to take up the post of classical music producer. I compiled, scripted and produced programmes and was involved in recording local performances. In 1996 I received an SABC Radio Artes Award for a documentary programme, ‘The Great Divide’.
I left the SABC in 1997 and changed direction into print journalism. After doing a short course at the Cape Technikon, I started freelance writing for the commercial features department at Independent Newspapers and soon afterwards was appointed sub-editor. Within Independent Newspapers over the past one-and-a-half decades I have worked on Cape Community Newspapers, the Cape Argus, and Personal Finance, mostly doing sub-editing and page layout, but also writing when I can, most recently for Personal Finance magazine, which appears quarterly.
I am also interested in internet journalism, and in 2011 completed a website design course at UNISA.I have been involved at Fine Music Radio for about 16 years, compiling music mainly for morning breakfast shows, and never daring to get behind the mic! In 2006 I took over editorship of Opus, then a printed magazine, now a monthly email newsletter, for FMR members.
