Two days of devastating fires along the Garden Route have left nearly 10 000 evacuated, and a staggering loss of 300 homes.

UPDATE:

More than 400 firefighters from almost every town and city along South Africa’s southern coastline have responded to the call over the last 24 hours, with more from even further afield continuing to stream into Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and surrounding areas.

Additional assistance from firefighters and equipment from outside Eden DM have been activated from:
- City of Cape Town
- Overberg District Municipality
- Cape Nature
- Working on Fire
- Cape Winelands

The fireline stretches from Sedgefield in the west to Plettenberg Bay in the east, with another large wildfire burning further east at the Van Stadens Nature Reserve near Port Elizabeth.

Numerous national, provincial and local government agencies, NGO’s, private companies and citizens have offered assistance,
- The SANDF has been deployed
- The NSRI has assisted with evacuations
- Go George buses have been deployed to assist with evacuations

- 9 people have passesd away as a result of the fires and the #CapeStorm
- 10000 residents evacuated
- 300 structures damaged or destroyed
- 1 firefighter from Plettenberg Bay FMU hospitalised

What can you do to help?
If you’re in the affected area:
- Stay where you are, unless
- It is no longer safe to remain, if ordered to evacuate or by instruction of emergency services personnel
- Keep phone lines clear, unless you have a genuine emergency
- Don’t drive if you don’t have to
- Please make way for emergency vehicles

- Do not attempt to get into any of the affected areas
- Please keep an eye on your local Facebook community pages as there are numerous local drop-off points for relief supplies

Items can be delivered to the Eden District Fire Station based at 17 Pioneer Street, Pacaltsdorp Industria (opposite Tyre & Tread) (Latitude: 33: 59: 36,10 S Longitude: 22: 26: 30,89 E).


If you are in Cape Town or surrounds:
The City of Cape Town has arranged for the following local fire stations to accept donations:
• Goodwood Fire Station
• Strand Fire Station
• Roeland Street Fire Station (in the CBD)
• Fish Hoek Fire Station

DHL has offered to transport all donations to the affected areas.
