Dragana Jevtovic

DRAGANA JEVTOVIC came to South Africa from Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1993.

She studied Philosophy, Psychology and History of Art at Belgrade University before completing her BA Mus (Hons) under Radmila Bakocevic, specializing in the vocal arts (opera, oratorio and solo song) at the Faculty of Music, Belgrade University of Arts.

In Yugoslavia she sang at concerts throughout the country as well as in the USA (including Carnegie Hall), Great Britain, Spain, France, Poland, Bulgaria and Italy and recorded for Yugoslavian Radio and Television.
She was a music critic for Radio “Belgrade 202”, reviewing classical music concerts, and had a regular music column in the leading Belgrade daily “Politika”.  Besides studying and working, Dragana had lots of  fun in Serbia:  she listened to a lot of great live jazz,  she dived to sunken ships, run a scuba diving school in Montenegro, skied in the Bosnian and Serbian mountains, sailed in the Adriatic, made crazy clothes and enjoyed fast driving and giving huge parties.

On her arrival in Cape Town she became a member the Cape Town Opera chorus and sang in all productions until 1998. She taught singing for ten years. In 2002 she gave solo recitals in Holland, Belgium and Prague in the Czech Republic, sharing concerts with the Tygerberg choir "Voces canorae".

Recently she has focused on her native Balkan tradition.  As a member of the Balkan Band “Playing with Fire” she performed at four Balkanology concerts, Cultivaria Festival and KKNK.  In 2007 and 2008 she sang at the Yiddish Song Festival at the Baxter Theatre.  Together with clarinetist Matthew Reid, guitarist Reza Khota and cellist Vela Mrdjen (her daughter) she has performed Gypsy, Serbian, Russian, Sephardic and Yiddish songs in various concerts in Cape Town and the Boland.

Her love for jazz has prompted her to take up the saxophone. She is a student of Bob Mowday and a member of “Amband” amateur jazz big band.

Dragana has many interests involving the arts (including belly dancing). She runs a ceramic studio from her home in Durbanville and (www.draganajevtovic.com) her work has found its way into galleries and homes all over the world.  While at work, she listens tirelessly to FMR and is also very happy to be on the other side of the microphone.

Dragana is married, a mother and stepmother to six children and owner of two dogs, three cats and three goldfish.

Dragana presents What a Wonderful World (every Sunday),  Jazz Connection (every Tuesday except the last Tuesday of the month),   Classical music on Collage (once a month) and World Music on World Café once a month and you can get more information on her programmes by visiting:
