Classical Programmes

At FMR we try to retain the unique identity of the various programmes, but it is not the intention to stifle the creative juices but instead to ensure programme content does not merge and become indistinguishable. Programme identity is important to FMR, as it is a key factor in catering to you the listener and thus guaranteeing quality and variety.

Weekday Programmes

  • Classic Breakfast: A variety of light and short works, including updates of local news, events, weather and traffic.
  • Classical Choice / Klassieke Keur: Whilst more formal than Classic Breakfast, still up-tempo, including early instrumental music moving through moving through the Classical and Romantic periods to 20th century works.
  • Midday Concert: This programme is modeled as a “mini” concert with overtures, concertos and symphonies.
  • Matinee: A formal programme that includes full information on composers and performers. There are generally at least two major works within the two-hour period.
  • Winding Down: An eclectic mix of excerpts and popular classical pieces, a breezy and light show for your drive home.

Specialist Programmes during the week

  • On Monday – Composer of the Week: A programme which features the work of a single composer, and the essential aim is to provide a “portrait” of the composer with biographical details, characteristic pieces, and musical achievements.
  • On Tuesday – Collage: A programme which features a selection of mainstream works arranged according to style and taste. The aim is to provide serious recital, chamber and ensemble music in a concert-type format.
  • On Wednesday – Symphony Concert: Symphonic works of all genres and periods.
  • On Thursday – Music among Friends: A programme which includes complete works from the lieder repertoire, and chamber music.
  • On Friday – Great Interpreters: Features recordings of a single performing artist either through complete works or single movements. A “portrait” of the artist is painted with informative biographical details, body of recorded material, and characteristic pieces.
  • On Friday – Classical Choice: starting on the 29th of June, John Carter and his friend, the microbiologist, Professor Arderne Forder, will present a programme during which Prof. Forder will talk about “Creativity and Disease – how illness affects literature, art and music”. He has chosen 7 artists ranging from Michelangelo to George Bernanrd Shaw. Pieces of music which were composed during the lifetimes of these individuals will be played. This should be an interesting show – perhaps a little out of the ordinary!
