Description
The speaker will be Mphuthumi ‘Mpush’ Ntabeni who has entitled his talk: Botanic Gardens and Xhosa Contributions. He was born near Queenstown in the Eastern Cape and trained in the built environment at Wits University. Mpush’s talk concerns the indentured labour from the Eastern Cape, after the Great Xhosa Famine in the late 1850s. Thousands of Xhosas were made to serve commercial agriculture and farm labour, public works and infrastructure, as well as urban and domestic servitude. Kirstenbosch is a beautiful garden built through the painful history of colonialism and exploited labour.
